ALDI Workzone bench drill.
Nifty mail box delivery this morning, a funny looking drill bit.
It’s a pocket hole drill bit with collet for depth adjustment used to join two pieces of timber by drilling into one at a angle to the right depth (collet) and then driving a screw through into the other timber.
Ideally you would use it in conjunction with a pocket hole jig to ensure the correct angle but they are expensive so I’ll have a go at making one.
Purchased one of these off Ebay for around $20 bucks so I can measure the speed of things, in particular the bandsaw.
Been going around measuring stuff that rotates – interesting.
Brought my Makita 6012HD 9.6V battery drill back to life!
As with most NiCds of this vintage the 9.6V battery pack will not accept a charge.
I have a Odyssey PC680 car battery lying around from a Subaru WRX, it’s still in OK condition so …decided to hard wire the Makita to run off the battery.
The construction of the battery pack is peculiar and…it has three terminals? I figured the third one was for temperature overload protection because there is a thermal sensor in the pack itself, don’t need that so pulled it out and soldered the alligator clip leads directly onto the + and – terminals at the top of the battery pack. Works great…this will be my countersinking drill – one less bit change.
Anyway…was using the drill and when I went to put it down on the bench I noticed the pos clip was hanging free !!!…crikey…the drill is working and it’s not connected to the car battery!!! The car battery has been charging the battery pack in the drill, and doing a good job because she has plenty of power!
Went back to check that thermal sensor that I pulled out and it’s actually a thermal fuse and yes – open circuit.
Looks like the “dead” battery pack is taking a charge, I need to pull everything apart again including the charger and re-wire as needed and hopefully the charger will once again be able to charge the battery pack.
I don’t have any sort of bench drill vice, a machine vice is on the shopping list so in the meantime decided to make one for timber – from timber.
Cut off the turn screw from a old but hefty C clamp – which took a while.
Early start this morning – off to ALDI to purchase the Multifunction Tool before they sell out. They open 8:30am and I was there before 8:00am and chatting to a few others at the entrance to ALDI. Around 8:15am there would have been maybe a dozen behind us and then the queue jumper arrived…this Asian guy walks up with a hand trolley and stands next to us…up against the roller door – WTF. Without a spoken word (racism) I gave him the thumb to take his proper place in the queue, he responded with “oh s.o.r.r.y” which provoked a chorus of comments from the multicultural crowd behind us a popular one being “Hi mate…this is Australia”.
Been waiting for this one to come around again – straight into the trolley

Although I have had a good quality vernier caliper for many years decided to get one as the eyes even with close-up glasses have trouble with the smaller graduations. Works quite well so no complaints. Has on and off buttons of course but you don’t need to actually turn it on, as soon as you open the jaws she turns on.
