9” Bandsaw – Replacing lower wheel bearings

Having completed the upper wheel, we now need to dismantled some stuff around the bottom of the saw to gain access and remove the lower wheel.

When I removed the lower wheel I noticed the bearings, like the upper lot…were completely stuffed.

This is the front of the lower wheel. As with the upper wheel mounted and aligned the front bearing flange using the same procedure. The back of this lower wheel is a different matter…

As mentioned in a previous post I’ve decided to directly drive the lower wheel with the same Vee pulley that was bolted to the back of the bearing shaft. A real bonus is that the motor can be moved towards the front which will reduce the footprint of the saw

Tomorrow morning, as with the upper wheel, I’ll go through the same steps to tune out the wobble and secure with eight screws. Later on all the flanges will come off to be glued – and again screwed.

The motor will come forward and I’ll get a smaller Vee belt so it’s closer to the frame.
