8” Bandsaw – Larger wheel bearings

The 608 skateboard wheel bearings are breaking down, the MDF wheels are pretty small and light so I suspect the bearing can’t handle the blade tension forces. We need larger bearings and…mount them in flanges glued and screwed on either side of each wheel.

You can see the debris at the bottom of the wheel shaft slot from the ruptured front bearing.

This time around the shafts (threaded rod) will be fixed and the wheels will spin on the bearings. Flanges are 64 x 64 mm pine and I got bearings with 30mm OD because the 30mm Forstner bit from the ALDI set bores a perfect hole for a snug fit

This is the upper wheel mount block, again you can see where the front bearing has spewed out some of it’s internals.

Tomorrow I’ll press in the bearings and mount the flanges onto the wheels. Been here before and there’s a special procedure for mounting the flanges to minimize wheel wobble etc…more to come.

Got some 10mm (up from 8mm) threaded rod for the new larger bearings (photo to follow) so now we have nuts and washers where previously there were 608 bearings.
