8” Bandsaw – Testing the motor

Working out how to wire up and bench test the Simpson washing machine motor.

1
A very nice brushless 3-wire capacitor start motor on the left and the wiring loom on the right – how do we wire it up ???

2
We need to work out which are the start and run wires, with white most likely the common. Started with the trusty analogue meter but the ohms difference between the two winding is very small.

Switch to a DVM…total across both windings is 40.3 ohms.

Common to red is 21 ohms.

Common to blue is 20.5 ohms.

OK…we have everything wired up to a terminal block…and ready to plug into power and switch on. Capacitor is in series with the red start winding. See the next post for a video clip of this setup running.

Note and not seen in the picture is that we are running off a RCD and I have the motor grounded. Also note the blocks of wood clamped to the motor brackets so we don’t have a runaway.
