Garage Workshop – Part 1

The 7 x 3.5 metre garage provides a nice workshop area but…I still have a space problem. This is mainly due to the fact that the garage was…well…just a garage with all the usual home and handyman stuff. However over the last decade, and certainly since I retired in 2010, woodworking has moved to the forefront of my hobbies. Therein lies the problem, cupboards full of electrical, electronics and computer stuff taking up floor space and preventing me from expanding my woodworking operations. There’s already a ‘space backlog’ with my router table and jigsaw table stacked in one corner – nowhere to put them. Anyway…winter is a good time for planning and that’s what I’m doing so hopefully by spring I’ll have somewhere to move all the secondary hobby stuff to – another shed?

Besides all the issues above I’ve had to locate my main workbench in the centre area (which I would like clear) because I have a pile of 2.4M long laminated chipboard material down the middle on the floor, so I just put the bench over that. The pile sticks out past the bench so I had to make up a ‘special’ stand for the table saw, which like the bench sits over the stuff – crikey.

Taurus table saw with a Bosch blade is adequate for my needs. Like the workbench the saw stand straddles  the long boards stacked underneath.

On the right of the the main workbench and taking up floor space is a table with 9” bandsaw and (out of sight) my homemade disc sander.

Behind the work bench against the wall near the side door is a sturdy bookcase with hand tools, screws and related hardware.

To the left of the tool cupboard is another bench with bulk hardware below, shelf storage and wall hanging tools.

That hefty washing machine motor is for a wood turning lathe, project postponed (for now) due to space restrictions – where will I put it ?

In front of the back windows is more shelf storage and to the left cupboards full of automotive, electronics, electrical and other stuff. Plonked on a stool is my jigsaw table – waiting for a home.

Across from the cupboards is a computer desk with tower
PC and monitor. Once again there is stuff here with no home, a router table and drum sander.

Still moving ACW in the back left corner is larger material storage, the drill work station and smaller material in timber bins and…

another work area utilising a modified wardrobe carcass.

Coming back along the roller door we have the scroll saw, my homemade bandsaw and the sliding mitre saw. And finally…

some general storage near the side door. That white cabinet was a entertainment unit that I built to house a CRT TV (remember them) and home theatre system.

Soon after the garage was built around 2005 I erected a mezzanine floor spanning the back half – it’s full as well.

To reiterate I’m planning a spring project to hopefully move some of this stuff out into another shed (which I have) which could be located ??? behind the chook run – stay tuned.
